The Little River, flowing through Townsend, is renowned for its rainbow and brown trout fishing opportunities. The headwaters and tributaries of the Little River originate in The Great Smoky Mountains National Park, offering some of the most beautiful and pristine trout waters available. Just 20 minutes from Townsend, anglers can find Abrams Creek, an excellent fishery. Additionally, hiking trails provide access to numerous smaller streams for those who prefer a more secluded fishing experience.

The Park spans 500,000 acres, featuring peaks that rise over 6,000 feet. The streams descending from these mountains create 750 miles of fishable trout streams. In these clear waters, you can expect to encounter rainbow, brown, and brook trout, as stocking ceased in the 1970s, meaning you won’t be fishing for hatchery trout.

For your fishing plans in the Smokies, consider visiting these outdoor supply stores:

- Little River Outfitters, located on Highway 321 in Townsend.

- The Backcountry, found at 8453 State Hwy. 73, Townsend.
